When a student is assigned a primary language in the Educator Center (or via other rostering methods), that setting helps personalize both the student experience and family communications across Age of Learning’s programs.
Here’s an overview of what the language setting does—and does not—affect in My Math Academy, My Reading Academy, and My Reading Academy Español.
Student Experience Supports
Depending on the program, students may see or hear instructions in their selected language:
| Feature | My Math Academy | My Reading Academy |
|---|---|---|
| “How to Play” audio instructions in 50+ languages | ✅ | ✅ |
| Game instructions in home language | ✅ | ❌ |
| Keyword glossary toggle to translate vocabulary | ✅ | ✅ |
| Closed captioning in English | ✅ | ✅ |
These features help multilingual learners (MLLs) better access instructional content without changing the core language of instruction, preserving alignment with research-based literacy and math models.
💡 Note: My Reading Academy Español (MRA-E) is a separate program to develop Spanish literacy delivered entirely in Spanish.
Family Communications
The student’s primary language also affects caregiver-facing communications:
Home access emails and activation instructions are sent in the selected language (when supported)
Family invitations sent via the Educator Center will display translated content when available
This helps ensure families are supported in getting started and staying engaged.
What the Language Settings Do Not Change
It does not translate the core instructional content in My Math Academy or My Reading Academy into the student’s home language
It does not affect the language of books, games, or videos within English-based programs
It does not automatically enable My Reading Academy Español—this is a separate program license
Note about My Math Academy Limitations for Spanish Settings
While the Student Experience Supports chart above lists what students may see or hear instructions in their selected language for My Math Academy and My Reading Academy, it's important to note that if a student's language is set to Spanish, activities currently available do not completely cover the 2nd grade curriculum. When the student has completed all of the available 2nd grade activities for Spanish speaking students, they will see a message to alert them that they are at the end of their My Math Academy experience.
If they continue to play they will be practicing previously completed activities to reinforce those skills. If teacher deem it more appropriate, they can switch the student's language settings to English to continue with My Math Academy without Spanish language support. As we continue to build out our language supports, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
Summary
Setting a student’s primary language helps make programs more accessible and family-friendly by providing multilingual supports where appropriate. It does not change the instructional language, but it enhances the experience for multilingual learners and their families.
