My Math Academy (MMA) is an adaptive learning program designed to ensure every student gets the "just right" learning experience—whether they’re catching up, building foundational skills, or ready to stretch into new challenges.
We understand that, especially at the beginning of the school year, educators may wonder if students are starting in the right place. Here's what you need to know:
How Placement Works
When students first log in to My Math Academy, they are guided through a placement process designed to evaluate what they already know and determine the most appropriate starting point in their math learning journey. Our new AI-powered Knowledge Mapping Mode makes this faster and more accurate than ever.
Personalized from the Start—and Always Adapting
MMA isn’t a “level-based” system like some other programs. Instead, it uses a dynamic Personalized Mastery Learning System to continuously adjust both:
The content a student receives (which game, video, or activity is next), and
The support they receive within each activity (through dynamic scaffolding and real-time feedback).
If a student breezes through initial activities, the system will move them forward. If they struggle, it provides targeted support and adjusts accordingly. Every student’s path is unique—and responsive to what they demonstrate in the moment.
Short-Term “Weirdness” Is Normal
At the beginning of the year, it’s normal to feel like students aren’t quite in the “right” spot. That’s okay! MMA is designed to calibrate quickly. In most cases, you’ll see it self-correct in just a few sessions as the system gathers more data and adapts. It doesn’t rely on one placement point—it learns from everything a student does.
Make Sure Students Complete All Activities
To get the best results from My Math Academy, it’s important for students to complete every activity—even ones that feel too hard or ones that they think they've played before.
Sometimes, students may be given activities that are beyond their current skill level. When this happens, they might choose to cancel out of the activity rather than try it. But skipping the activity means the program doesn’t get the information it needs to adjust. Without that signal, the same kind of activity may keep showing up.
The same is sometimes true when a student sees what looks like an activity they've already completed and so they cancel it without playing. In this case, the system is presenting another version of the activity to make sure they have mastered it or to test them at I higher level of the activity. Cancelling rather than playing will typically mean the student continues to see the activity over and over.
That’s why it’s important to encourage students to play through all assigned activities, even if they don’t know the answer or get things wrong, and even if it looks like an activity they've already played. Struggling with a skill provides a valuable signal to the system, as does confirming mastery of the activity at a higher level. The program uses this signal to adjust the difficulty and guide the student to the right level.
Why No Fixed Levels?
Because learning doesn’t happen in a straight line. MMA was built on learning science that shows students progress best when instruction adjusts to their current knowledge, rather than sticking to a pre-set level. Fixed levels can give a false sense of “ahead” or “behind” when students are simply on different learning paths.
Want to See What They're Working On?
You can always check your Educator Center's Progress Dashboard to view where students started and how they’re progressing. If you see signs of struggle, use the recommended "Take Action" offline activities that target specific skills for intervention or enrichment.
Trust the Process—But Reach Out if Needed
If you’ve given a student multiple sessions and still have concerns about their progress, reach out to your Customer Success contact or visit the Educator Center for tools and support.
If you believe the placement process wasn’t valid (e.g., the wrong student was logged in, a student didn’t understand it was a test, or someone helped them), you can request a placement test reset by submitting a support ticket. Please include:
School name
Student name
Teacher’s email
Specific reason for the reset request
Placement tests are usually reset the same day or early the next business day. You'll receive a confirmation email once it's complete.
Placement Tests can typically be reset on the same day they are requested or early the following business day. Our Customer Care team will send an email confirmation once the test has been reset for the student.
